ROUND TABLE
"REGIONAL PACKAGING INDUSTRY AND SUSTAINABILITY"
Packaging and Packaging Waste Management -
Legal Framework (June 5th, 2012)

As part of World Packaging Days 2012 and celebrating the World Environment Day a round table "Regional Packaging Industry and Sustainability" was held on June 5th in hotel Le Meridien Lav***** in Split. The topic of the Round Table was "Packaging and Packaging Waste Management –Legal Framework". It was a regional gathering of packaging producers and users, as well as representatives of trade associations, chambers, ministries and other bodies and institutions linked to the packaging industry.
Along with the Croatian Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection's presenter, other presenters from related ministries dealing with environment protection from the neighbouring countries also attended the round table - representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Serbia. They presented the practice in packaging waste management related to their countries, talking about their experiences and solutions applied so far, but also about the further plans that need to be completed in order to reach the final goals. All participants of the round table - packaging producers and users - had the chance to hear the responses to their stated questions regarding the matter in question.
Packaging and packaging waste management is a topic that must be regulated in accordance with the EU directives as well as the legislation of each country in the region, by securing the implementation of new legislation and by developing the necessary infrastructure which allows the correct procedures to be put into action. It is necessary to assure that a systematic education of local residents is being done, all with the aim of environmental protection. The initiative to make this type of annual gathering of relevant representatives of the regional countries with the main goal to obtain a synergic collaboration has been strongly supported.
